The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors endorsed Metrorail alternative T6 as the locally preferred alternative for enhancing transit service in the Dulles Corridor. This rail alternative has 11 stations, eight of which are in Fairfax County. It also has four stations in Tysons Corner one of which is underground and four in the Dulles Corridor. The $3.1 billion capital investment in the 24-mile extension of the Metrorail system will be shared by federal, state, and local governments and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The state is seeking 51 percent of the rail cost from the federal government. Fairfax County’s $514 million share will be raised through a special tax district for commercial properties and bonds. Loudoun County and the
Town of Herndon have already endorsed the rail alternative.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is expected to
endorse the rail plan in the next few weeks.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is scheduled
to vote on the locally preferred alternative in November and the
Commonwealth Transportation Board in December. Next steps include completion of the Final Environmental Impact Statement by Spring of next year and securing a full funding grant agreement with the Federal Transit Administration. Efforts will also focus on ensuring that funding for the Dulles rail project is included in the reauthorization of the surface transportation act in fall 2003. |
